It’s easy to become socialized into doing things exactly as everybody else does them, even when a particular choice doesn’t work for you individually. Yet, practice can help you become better at recognizing the difference between socialized patterns and your individual choices, and make decisions that truly work for you in the context of your life. The more you practice noticing and deciding, the easier it will get.
One way to start such a practice is to pick something simple, something that is easy to manipulate and observe. The way you wear your rings, for example.
The worksheet you’ll download below provides simple tracking for a little experiment worth trying. Instead of wearing your rings in the traditional manner (usually on the middle or ring finger, near the knuckle closest to your palm), try spending days at a time wearing a ring on one of the placements suggested in the diagram, and rate how it feels to do so. You might find that in certain positions, the pressure exerted by the ring on your finger has surprising effects, such as relaxation and alleviation of headaches, or the inverse of such. You might also get a chance to observe the diverse reactions of other people in response to this little break in tradition, even with something as trivial as wearing a ring.
What do you notice? What feels best? Does this change day by day?
