Ideally, you would make a custom plan for everything you want to work on. Realistically, though, there often isn’t enough time and energy for this level of customization, and you might be compelled to do one of two things:
- Rush into action without a plan, which is a great way to waste time and do poor quality work, or
- Avoid taking any action until you “find the time” to make a good plan, which means you’re wasting time not creating any value at all.
Both of these are poor choices, and this is where the value of defaults comes in.
A default is like a contract you make with yourself ahead of time in case of indecision. For example, I may decide that if I don’t have a better idea about what to eat for breakfast when I wake up, I will always eat an egg over-easy with some cheese melted on top. Or if I am deciding when to stop eating, I will stop anytime I can answer “yes” to the question “Can I stop eating right now?”
The process of planning in general needs a default of its own. This worksheet is an attempt to create a universal, generic planning process that works reliably well anytime you want to start an initiative but don’t have the resources to plan it in a more customized way.
