I’ve come across a few really great ideas for living well in a small place. One of those is the idea to DIY an ironing board that takes up less space and is super portable. Some notably great tutorials can be found at Domestocrat, Oh, Fransson!, and Thrifty Crafty Girl. Of these, I liked that last one the best because it took the minimalism one step further and eliminated the actual board, installing magnets instead so you can iron on your dryer or washing machine. My dryer and washing machine are stacked, so I decided to improvise with a boardless ironing board that simply attaches to my work table.
This is just two sheets with several layers of batting in the middle, to which I attached velcro strips. I also put velcro on the bottom of my work table, and ended up with an awesome, foldable little ironing pad that stretches flat and tight when I needed and can be shoved in the closet when I don’t.
My final thought is this: stop thinking that things have to be the way they are simply because it’s the way other people do something. Challenge yourself to customize everything in your life to your specific needs, whether it’s a small space, a sensitive stomach, or your career.
Yeah, I just used an ironing board to get all motivation-y on you. Lead good lives, people.
