Happy New Year!
I’m not big on making NYE-induced resolutions. I am, however, a fan of coming up with one simple rule for myself follow, a rule will ideally simplify my life in the upcoming year. This year, I want to tackle cravings.
We all suffer from cravings. Some of them might be major sources of stress, others may be minor blimps in our daily lives. Whether you’re trying to control something silly, like a tendency to choose a cup of coffee over that glass of water you know you should drink, or something major, like a self-destructive habit, I propose that you try to help yourself this year by joining me in following this one simple rule. Here it is:
Whenever you’re craving something you know you shouldn’t crave, do one of two things:
1) Learn to enjoy the fantasy, or
2) Go help someone
The first option is just a reminder that fantasizing about things, no matter how dangerous-seeming or trivial, is a healthy, natural thing. Admit it, in almost all cases the fantasy of doing something is going to be way better than actually experiencing it and then living with the repercussions. And no, just because you’re letting yourself entertain the thought doesn’t mean you’re more likely to go ahead and do it. Think of it more as a way to release tension, something you allow yourself to do in order to keep decision fatigue from getting you in real trouble. Don’t let the stress of stubborn willpower wear you down–sip on a martini while letting your mind wander, and then move on. Unless, of course, the craving you’re fighting is alcohol. You get the idea.
Helping someone in a moment of weakness is the best way to reset your mind. Just get out and think about someone else for a change, and let the warm fuzzy feeling take over after you act like a decent human being. Bonus points if you see this person face-to-face when helping them. Super bonus points when it’s unsolicited. Super duper points if you keep your mouth shut about yourself, and never let the other person know what hardships or emotions you had to overcome to help them.
That’s it! May 2013 be a year full of cravings that you manage successfully, and may you help many people along the way. Cheers, everyone!
